Here are 5 Daily Habits for Better Foresight that Richard Lum, PhD ‎@kikilo recommends for people wanting to do futures research and foresight work.

You don’t have to be a professional futurists to raise your awareness and be open to future possibilities. You just need to pay attention to different perspectives and ask questions………….

RadarExpose yourself to lots of stuff: professional futurists usually do this through scanning, but many are also avid readers and love to constantly learn new subjects.

BrokenBreak out of bounds: explore other sectors, industries, and regions; this will give you alternative and provocative perspectives from which to view and reframe your own industry or community.

VisualizationThink (and take notes) visually: “visualization” is certainly all the rage right now, and for good reason: it helps tremendously with think­ing through complex and interrelated issues.

WhyKeep asking why?: the world is in fact a complex, densely inter­dependent set of systems… that means that we have to do a lot of probing into connections, causes, and our own assumptions.

WhatPrompt others to consider what if?: we also need to keep every­one’s minds (including our own) flexible by asking about not just what we expect to happen, but what logically could happen.

“Can’t stop got to pop” is it a 21st century disease?

You know the tell-tale symptoms of “can’t stop, got to pop” or as I call it  “busy-i-tus” a 21st  Century disease. When you have no time to do things you want to do, your attention span is that of a gnat and you have that overwhelming sinking feeling of “is this it?” or  (fill in the blanks with your feeling)?

Or maybe it’s just me? You see in 2013 I said, “Hold the corporate bus!” and got off.

I’m half way through my 3rd gap year and have a very different perspective now, and yes it has taken me all this time to find myself again!  After all, it took over three decades to get lost in the first place, so a return on my investment of one year per decade in my University of Life is worth it.

Recently I came across a poem that my children used to love me to read to them in a mad fanatical way, called “A Busy Day” by Michael Rosen or as we call it “Can’t stop, got to pop”:

When did everyone get so busy? Any time I hear someone say, “I don’t have time” “I’m too busy”, I think hmmmmmm maybe another undiagnosed case of ’busy-i-tus?

Are these just symptoms of a 21st Century disease?

Lets consider the exponential acceleration of the web with social and mobile technologies; they are always on with the expectation of an immediate response and availability. The good news is that this ubiquitous technology is finally enabling anyone on our planet with a phone to connect, learn and do business in ways that were not possible before. The bad news is that if we are not mindful of the way we place expectations on ourselves to keep up, the cases of “busy-i-tus” will continue grow.

To cure a dis-ease like “busy-i-tus” you first need to be aware that you have it. Only then you can “treat” the cause of your lack of “ease”. Being aware is the first step, then knowing you have a choice is the next, then you can take one step at a time to focus on what’s important to you. Make space in your head and heart, be kind to yourself and then you can be kind to others.

The good news is you don’t have to “get off the bus” and make a big scary life changes like me, you can start now this minute and take one step at a time:

Choose what is important to you, prioritise it, and just do it.

Embracing new technology and having an open and curious mindset is the key for not only growth but survival in every industry today. I cannot think of one industry that has not felt the distributive effects of new technologies and the rate of social adaptation. I deliberately don’t call it adoption as this is a term for “Systems of Record”.  We now have “Systems of Engagement” (thanks Geoffrey Moore) and they are defined by our social interaction and creativity. We can all be publishers, authors, musicians, artists and connect in ways that were virtually impossible before.

I recently read a fascinating post by Ayelet Baron that brilliantly encapsulates the essence of  what we are seeing. The “new art of the possible” is taking place thanks to the combination of an open mindset and embracing technology.  Baron calls it “an abundance mindset”, also attributed to the late great Stephen Covey.

When Time Was of the Essence

The clock ticks towards the calendar end of the year. Time dominates the waking thoughts of working people: Not having enough of it, spending it productively. In fact, the American consumer – about as good a bellweather as any – is reported to have spent a 119% increase on productivity apps in just a year – you know: PocketList, Wunderlist etc.

Time hurtles forwards and yet goes backwards: New research shows that the more time we spend online (billed as the great time-saver it has often become the great time waster) the less fulfilled we feel.

And time stops: Each year we mourn the passing of those we love whose lives end suddenly, or predictably, or brutally, or slowly. But no amount of futurism can extend life beyond a certain point.

So, following my last post on diversity I’ve been reflecting on how this translates into my day to day life as a leader at work. How does it change how I am, who I am?

I confess that I can speak too much, listen too little, be bursting with ideas that can tumble out at a rate of knots. And sometimes when I encounter someone who doesn’t catch my enthusiasm I start to fret. Don’t they understand me? Don’t they think I’m any good at what I’m doing? Who do they think they are?

I hear their explanations setting out their perspective as an attack on my own rather than really listening to what they are saying. It happened to me recently, and then I paused and looked at one of the reminders on the wall: ’Suspend judgement and be curious’. Hm.

Tectonic shifting in the future of business

The wind is changing for business today, poppin wind chg in fact its more of a tectonic shifting.

Some industries are undergoing disruption of  earthquake proportion, whilst others are experiencing early signals in the form of small tremors.  The  qualities of this tectonic theory are unified with the technology and human behaviour. It has formed seismic waves that are revolutionising our understanding of the future of business.

Technology is a given: The rate of change has not only disrupted the IT industry but has now fundamentally shifted the plates of most others. Some industries are in denial by keeping busy with old models, some have already slipped through the cracks, whilst others have seen the Richter scale readings and are actively seeking  new models and paths.

Human behaviour is the variable: The mindset and expectation of people can range from an all consuming addiction, whilst at the other end some people have developed a form of religious abstention. This personal bias is profoundly affecting the culture within business i.e. the unwritten code of how we do things around here. It is having an accumulative  effect and impacting on their industry, a sort of industry cognitive bias.

This tectonic theory unified by technology and human behaviour is and will continue to fundamentally change the way we do business. Those that run businesses  need to “get out of their own way” to re look at  WHY they are in business. To reconnect with not only those people that pay them (customers) but also just as important, those people that are the business (employees). If you have ever watched the programme “undercover boss” you will know the answer to the business issues always lies with the people who do the job.

For businesses  to have a future they need to reconnecting with WHY they exist, collaborate with diverse people, and embrace technology that can now actually enable them.
